Oral surgery covers a variety of procedures, including extractions, removal of cysts and polyps, and biopsies.

One common procedure is the removal of wisdom teeth, the third set of molars that typically emerge in your late teens or early twenties. Wisdom teeth can cause issues when they are misaligned or impacted.

Wisdom teeth extraction is often recommended when:

  • The jaw isn’t large enough to allow wisdom teeth to fully erupt in a functional position for chewing.
  • Teeth have only partially erupted, which can lead to infection, causing pain, swelling, jaw stiffness, and illness. Partially erupted teeth are also more susceptible to decay and gum disease due to their difficult-to-reach position for brushing and flossing.
  • Poorly aligned wisdom teeth crowd or damage neighboring teeth, jawbone, or nerves. Those leaning toward the second molars can trap plaque and debris, increasing the risk of decay.
  • Cysts (fluid-filled sacs) form or may develop. Left untreated, these cysts can destroy nearby teeth, jawbone, and nerves. In some cases, untreated cysts can lead to tumor development, requiring more complex surgery.
